The purpose of this biennial workshop is to encourage writers to create artistic theatrical scripts for biennial young audiences. It provides a forum through which each playwright receives constructive criticism and the support of a development team consisting of a professional director and dramaturg. Plays will be cast from professional, experienced, age-appropriate actors from Central Indiana.
The process begins through interaction among the playwright, director and dramaturg prior to coming to Indianapolis. Plays will be cast by Janet Allen, Artistic Director of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, and Dorothy Webb, Artistic Director of the Bonderman in accordance with Equity regulations and recommendations by the playwright and director prior to the beginning of the workshop. Scripts will be shared with age-appropriate young people in the Indianapolis area who during the workshop will be invited to meet with the playwrights and to attend selected rehearsals as well as a final reading of the script. Rehearsal, collaboration and opportunities for script revision will continue throughout the workshop prior to performing the rehearsed readings at the Symposium.
Awards in the 2009 Symposium will be presented to up to four finalists and up to six semi-finalists. In addition to the development work, cash awards each will be presented to the playwrights whose plays are selected for full development. Directors, producers, critics, teachers, and major publishers of scripts for young audiences attend the Symposium and provide valuable reactions to the plays. No award will be made to a playwright unless s/he is able and willing to be involved in the developmental process and to attend the presentation of his/her work during the Symposium. Transportation to and from Indianapolis and lodging will be furnished for finalists. Per diem is not provided. Semifinalists will receive certificates, and excerpts will be presented in rehearsed readings during the Symposium for those semi-finalist playwrights who attend.
An annotated list of plays receiving high evaluations will be submitted to the American Alliance for Theatre and Education Directory of Award Winning Plays, and sent to college and professional companies that indicate interest in producing new scripts. All playwrights and scripts submitted will be recognized in the Symposium Program.
